Since downside risks are high in corrupt countries, this implies a need for a higher compensation (risk premium). When interest rates are low in Western European countries, the United States, and Japan, it is tempting to diversify and invest in some fast-growing developing countries. The expected return from these foreign investments needs to be much higher to compensate for the probability of downside risk arising from unpredictable corruption.
